Celebrate May as National Foster Care Month by Thanking Those Who Make a Difference
There are extraordinary people who walk among us every day, yet you wouldn’t know it by looking at them.
These are the same people who put the needs of children unrelated to them at the forefront of their lives; these are the same people who open their homes to hundreds of thousands of children and teens every year.
So why do they do it?
Because they are foster parents and they care deeply about the wellbeing of children.
Foster parents provide an unparalleled service in our country, one which shows how in times of need, there are special people among us who will answer the call and help as needed. Whether that means taking in a young boy who has been abused or a teenage girl who has been neglected, there are often foster parents ready to open their door to another temporary or permanent member of their family.
What some people don’t realize about the foster care system is that the goal of the State for most foster children is to reintegrate them into their biological families. Often times the biological parents have ample opportunities to change or fix the problem for which their children have been removed from their home.
This results in foster parents often having to say goodbye to a child they have taken in for weeks, months or even years, sometimes with little notice. Obviously, this can be very difficult for those who have grown close to the foster child, yet they will often welcome with open arms the next foster child they are contacted about.
It is just who they are, and for them, it would be impossible to say no.
This May, if you know someone who provides foster care to a child, thank them for it. Tell them you appreciate what they do for children who don’t have any say in where they will spend their childhood. Tell them you are thankful that there are people out there like them who are willing to take time out of their own lives to make sure a child’s life remains happy and hopeful.
Considering Adoption salutes present, past and future foster parents this May. If you are a foster parent, we sincerely thank you for the amazing contributions you make to thousands of kids every year across the country.
Without you, the dreams of many children would be lost.
Thanks to you, those dreams will remain as strong and as vivid as ever.
